The Invisalign Teen Process
Consultation
Your teen will first attend an initial consultation with our Sharon orthodontist, Dr. Agamov, to determine if they qualify for Invisalign treatment. Dr. Agamov will thoroughly examine your teen’s mouth, review their medical history, and ask them what they want out of their orthodontic treatment.
Design
Once our Invisalign dentist has approved your teen for orthodontic treatment with Invisalign Teen, she’ll take images and impressions of their teeth. These will be sent to an Invisalign-owned lab and serve as the blueprints for your teen’s custom-made aligner trays.
Demonstration
When your teen returns to our Sharon, MA office, our orthodontist will make sure their new trays fit properly. Then, she’ll show them how to wear their trays before sending them home with their first sets of aligners.
Post-Orthodontic Treatment
Your teen will likely need to use post-Invisalign retainers, like the kind made by Vivera™, to ensure their treatment results stay. Vivera retainers are very similar to the Invisalign trays your teen’s orthodontist will design. In fact, they’re based on the same digital images and impressions used to make your teen’s Invisalign, can be removed easily just like Invisalign, and can be cared for in much the same manner.
However, it’s crucial for your teen to wear their retainers for a prescribed amount of time to prevent orthodontic relapse. If retainers are not worn for their prescribed amount of time, orthodontic relapse can cause your teen’s teeth to start shifting back into their original positions. This occurs because the ligaments that hold these teeth have muscle memory of their original positions and need time and guidance to get used to their new ones. Our orthodontist will prescribe the right amount of time for your teen to wear their post-Invisalign retainers to ensure their results are long-lasting.

Can my teen chew gum while undergoing Invisalign treatment?
There are certain behaviors and habits your teen must avoid to ensure their Invisalign treatment goes as planned. Not only should they not chew gum while wearing their Invisalign aligner trays, but they should also:
- Remove their trays before a physically intensive activity like contact sports
- Remove their aligner trays before eating or drinking anything other than cool water
- Avoid biting down or chewing on non-food items like erasers, pencils, and nails
- Clean and store their trays as instructed
- Clean their teeth and rinse their Invisalign trays before putting them back in
- Follow any additional instructions for care their orthodontist gives them
