As you get older, you’re more likely to lose teeth. Tooth loss doesn’t just deprive you of your natural smile though: it can also change the shape of your face, cause misalignment in your remaining teeth, and negatively impact your self-confidence. Dentists like Dr. Agamov offer many restoration options, but if you need a sturdy replacement for a single tooth or multiple teeth, dental bridges might be right for you.
What Are Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges are restorations made of false teeth called pontics. Crowns are attached to either end of the pontics, which fill the space left behind by the missing teeth. Your crowns will hold the restoration in place, effectively ‘bridging the gap’ left by your lost teeth.
Bridges can be made of a variety of materials, including porcelain, gold, and alloys. On top of the materials they can be made from, your dentist can offer different types of dental bridges including fixed bridges, removable bridges, and implant-supported bridges.
Fixed bridges are held securely in place by the teeth located on either end of your pontics, often called anchor teeth. With fixed bridges, these anchor teeth are shaved down into bases for the crowns to be cemented over them, holding the restoration in place. Fixed bridges cannot be removed without the help of your dentist and don’t need to be taken out every night to be cleaned.
Best dental experience I’ve ever had! The staff was warm, welcoming, friendly, and professional. Thanks for a great first visit!
