FAQ

Are dental implants painful?

Receiving dental implants is a virtually painless process. Dr. Agamov will administer a local anesthetic before beginning treatment to ensure you don’t feel any pain or discomfort. We’re also proud to offer dental sedation for patients with anxiety about the procedure.

It’s normal to experience some mild soreness once the numbness subsides, but any pain should fade within a few days. You can alleviate these symptoms with over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses.

How will I manage discomfort during recovery from dental implant treatment?

You shouldn’t expect any serious pain during your recovery period after receiving dental implant treatment. However, some soreness is normal in the days following your procedure. In most cases, this will be entirely manageable with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Depending on the extent of your surgery, your dentist might prescribe a course of painkillers.

If you’re experiencing unusual discomfort during your recovery period, or if your feelings of pain increase suddenly, contact your dentist to report your symptoms so that Dr. Agamov can provide relief.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants varies from patient to patient. During your initial consultation, Dr. Agamov will inspect your oral health and assess whether you’re an immediate candidate for dental implants. We’ll discuss all your treatment options and provide a cost estimate during the meeting.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last for decades. However, like all restorations, they’ll need to be replaced eventually. Dental implants typically need to be replaced after 15 to 25 years of use. To ensure optimal performance for as long as possible, we recommend scheduling yearly checkups at our Sharon, MA dental practice.

How do you take care of your dental implants after the procedure?

Dental implants are cared for just like natural teeth! This means brushing your new teeth at least twice a day, flossing daily, and attending regular check-ups with your Sharon dentist. To avoid scratching the restorations, use a soft-bristled toothbrush while avoiding any toothpastes that contain abrasive ingredients. Dr. Agamov will be happy to answer any questions if you’re unsure about the oral care products you’re using.

Am I a candidate for dental implants if I have dentures?

If you’ve worn dentures for many years, you may have experienced some deterioration of your jawbone density. For patients who lack the jawbone density necessary to support implants, Dr. Agamov can perform a bone graft. This supplemental treatment will restore your oral health and help ensure you qualify for the dental implant procedure. Unlike other restorations for missing teeth, your dental implants will stimulate healthy bone growth and strengthen your jaw once they’re placed.

How can I reduce facial swelling after my dental implant treatment?

Swelling and minor bruising of the face is normal after a dental implant surgery. The anti-inflammatory medication you take for pain will help reduce swelling. An ice pack, wrapped in a towel and applied gently to the face, can also provide relief from facial pain and swelling. Do not apply ice directly to your skin for extended periods, as this can cause damage, especially if you are still numb from your procedure.

While sleeping, it may help to prop your head up higher than usual to let gravity pull collected blood from the swollen areas of your face. Swelling symptoms will subside over the course of your first few days after treatment. Even if you have implants on both sides of your jaw, it’s common to experience more swelling or discomfort on one side than the other.

What foods should I eat during my recovery from dental implant treatment?

With your new dental implants, you’ll quickly return to enjoying your favorite foods. However, in the days immediately following your surgery, it’s important to stick to dishes that won’t interfere with your healing.

For approximately your first week with your new restoration, we recommend soft foods and liquids to prevent unnecessary pressure on your implants during healing. Soups and soft noodles are a good option, but allow them to cool before eating. Overly hot foods can cause damage to tender gum tissue, especially if the numbness from your procedure hasn’t subsided.

Treat yourself to iced desserts and smoothies — these will be comfortable to eat and provide cooling relief to your gums. Your dentist will talk to you before your procedure and make sure you know what’s safe to eat after your treatment.
